The importance of Mandapam placement – Feng Shui and Vaastu tips for an auspicious ceremony

What makes Indian weddings auspicious is not only the beauty and glam of it all but certain rituals and formalities that we abide by. Mandap shape and direction

The shape of the wedding mandapam should be a proper square. Square shape is to ensure that all four corners have equal energy and the positive energy is balanced and contained. The mandap should be arranged in the North-East or Ishaanyam corner. Also make sure that all the electric equipment like sound system and DJ are in the south-east corner, not hindering the mandap. The wedding couple should be sitting facing the east.

Placement and dimensions of the Havan or sacred fire

The sacred fire should be burning in the south-east direction. This is called the Agni konam. The Havan should be of equal length, breadth and height, to balance the energy. One side being longer than the other is considered bad. Also ensure that there are no breaks in the fire pit. Breaks or irregularities will be a gateway for the positive energy to leave from.

Auspicious Flowers

Wedding decor and the florals are being planned in the most extravagant way nowadays. It is all about the colours and palettes. But there are certain flowers that are auspicious and some not. Dried flowers, or even a day old flowers are considered bad. Flowers like carnations, daisies, and chrysanthemums are considered good. Lotus flower is the representative flower of goddess laxmi and is the most auspicious. Flowers like ketaki and karavira are considered inauspicious.
Feng shui tips
The ancient Chinese practice of arranging things in a certain order to ensure harmony and balance also gives a few tips on the wedding venues. Light candles or diyas in all corners and leave no corner dark or gloomy. Avoid placing wall clocks anywhere near the venue. As weddings should be “timeless”. Avoid rectangular tables with sharp corners. These are said to cause sharp conflicts among the people invited.
What goes where

There are set directions as to where the guests should be seated, what direction the couple must face, where the entrance and exit of the hall and even the washrooms are. The hall entrance is typically in the east or north direction. Washrooms must be in the northwest or west, guests should be seated in the southwest or north direction. The wedding couple must face the east during the ceremony and post ceremony greeting of guests. Cooking and food in the south-east is considered safe vaastu wise. Avoid oval or round shaped wedding hall venues.
